Vusi Mahlasela on NPR's Morning Edition

This Tuesday April 24th, South African revolutionary and ATO recording artist Vusi Mahlasela will make a very special appearance on National Public Radio's popular morning show, Morning Edition. Make sure to tune in 6:50am, 8:50am, or 10:50am EST to your local NPR station to hear incredible music and a remarkable life story directly from the man who lived it.

Other Music Goes Digital

Other Music has been a popular New York City landmark since it opened its doors in 1995. Back then, the independent music store had half-empty shelves, minimal staff, and sold mostly vinyl. Since then, Other Music has become a popular mecca for rare and independent music.

We all know that the music business is changing and Other Music is changing with it. They are taking it digital, with a new online store that sells MP3's. Why choose Other Music over iTunes? Easy--Other Music's staff hand-picks the store's offerings and writes straight-forward reviews for music fans, by music fans. In this digital age, it is important that we support independent music stores like Other Music so they can continue to operate and share interesting music with the world.

His poetic universe allows you to discover the greatest artists of the moment performing in unusual and surprising environments. Lula, We Love You

The best women's fashion magazine on the shelves these days is Lula, edited by Canadian ex-stylist for VOGUE, Leith Clark. This beautiful fashion bible is based in London and is a work of art in itself.

Pick up a copy of Lula if you can find one and I promise you won't regret it. The clothes are stunning, the photography is dreamy, and it features profiles of people like William Eggleston, Dolly Parton, and Jenny Lewis.
Love.

Ornette Coleman Wins Music Pulitzer

77 year-old jazz legend Ornette Coleman has just won the Music Pulitzer Prize for his recording "Sound Grammar." The prize made history this year for honoring a recording of purely improvised music. "Sound Grammar" was not on the list of 140 Pulitzer music nominees but panelists purchased the album themselves and wrote him in on the ballot.

The fact that Coleman was awarded the Pulitzer for such an untraditional work in a such an untraditional way comes as no surprise considering the fact that he has reached legendary status by pushing the envelope since the debut of his innovative recording, "The Shape of Jazz" in 1959.

Happy Birthday Colette!

Colette in Paris is my favorite store. Ever. And it just celebrated its 10th year of being a mecca for art, design, music, style, food, and basically anything else cool. In true Colette style, some of the world's best artists and designers created cakes and works of art that pay tribute to the Parisian style institution.
Log on to Colette's myspace to check out some of the creations and visit their website to stream their amazing audio player and experience some of the best shopping the internet has to offer.

From Poland?

On April 5, Kasia Kay Art Projects in Chicago unveiled their new exhibition "From Poland?" which features the work of contemporary Polish artists. Poland is a country with a severe artistic identity crisis and this exhibition addresses that issue.

The vast range of pieces on display at "From Poland?" destroys any stereotype about Polish art that one may have, whether it's that it only consists of folk arts and crafts, that is dark and dreary, or worst of all, non-existent.

Getting Warmer

After being denied the use of the National Mall and Capitol Grounds in Washington DC, Al Gore's Live Earth Concert has found a home at Giants Stadium in Rutherford, NJ. The concert will take place on July 7 in Rutherford, London, Sydney, Rio de Janiero, Tokyo, Shangai, Johannesburg, and even Antarctica. Its goal is to raise international awareness of global warming.

Confirmed acts include Dave Matthews Band, the Police, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw, Ludacris, and Jon Bon Jovi.

Neon Invasion

The Klaxons are one of the most hyped bands of the past year and they are back in NYC for a string of performances before returning to their native England. One of the most popular artists in the recent "new rave" movement, the Klaxons are three young day-glo lads from the UK who are ready to assault you with synth. Their mental harmonies and overdose of drum machine makes their new album "Myths of the Near Future" stand out like, well, a fluorescent yellow sweatshirt in a sea of black cashmere.

Sasha & Shawna at The Box

On March 22nd, the most exclusive and talked about venue in New York City welcomed the angelic operatic duo Sasha & Shawna. The Box, which is owned and operated by Simon Hammerstein, the grandson of Oscar Hammerstein, has been packed with international A-listers since its opening last year. The space's gaudy chandeliers, velvet drapes and mismatched wallpaper make visitors feel as if they have stepped into the world of Oscar Wilde.

The setting was perfect for the intimate performance, showcasing the talents of the modelesque singers who were recently featured in the nationwide PBS special "Heavenly Voices." Sasha & Shawna's repertoire featured selections from their new album "Siren," including operatic classics as well as renditions of such modern hits as "Fields of Gold" by Sting.

The Box was packed with industry insiders, tastemakers, and celebrities including hip hop legend Andre Harrell, former VH1 CEO Ed Bennett, American Idol's Constantine Maroulis, and castmembers from the VH1 reality show "The Agency."

Those who were lucky enough to attend this amazing event got a sneak peak at two talented performers who are already creating a stir in the tastemaker community.

Bjork at United Palace Theatre

Hearing that Bjork is coming to town may not be incredibly exciting for the average New Yorker. She's played here several times, so what makes this time so different? The answer is simple. Instead of performing at a traditional commercial venue such as Madison Square Garden or Nokia Theatre in Times Square, she will be taking the stage at the historic United Palace Theatre.

Located on Broadway at 175th St, United Palace opened in 1930 and started out showing films and vaudeville shows. It was purchased by Christ United Church in 1969 and has hosted mostly religious events since then. Viewing such a theatrical performer in such a dramatic venue will be a historic event in itself.
Bjork will be performing live at the United Palace Theatre May 5th.

The Art of Drink

Our new favorite blog is dedicated to one of our oldest favorite things: the cocktail. The Art of Drink teaches its readers how to make the perfect "adult beverage" for every occasion. Did you know that there is a perfect drink to enjoy during the worst stage of global warming? I bet you didn't. Or how to make vermouth? This simple, no-frills blog will teach you how. Log on before your next party and your friends will be amazed.

Not Your Typical iPod Case

Indie filmmaker/ graphic designer Mike Mills created this special iPod case for exclusive boutiques last year but it is now available at Amazon.com. It even comes with its own ribbon that reads: "My Hands Feel Cold Your Body Feels Warm". You can purchase a Mike Mills iPod case online for about $40.
