Ornette Coleman Wins Music Pulitzer

77 year-old jazz legend Ornette Coleman has just won the Music Pulitzer Prize for his recording "Sound Grammar." The prize made history this year for honoring a recording of purely improvised music. "Sound Grammar" was not on the list of 140 Pulitzer music nominees but panelists purchased the album themselves and wrote him in on the ballot.
The fact that Coleman was awarded the Pulitzer for such an untraditional work in a such an untraditional way comes as no surprise considering the fact that he has reached legendary status by pushing the envelope since the debut of his innovative recording, "The Shape of Jazz" in 1959.
